The Soma Leo Foundation

A 10 year legacy

During 2014 our businesses organised events to raise funds to build a new school in Nyiera, western Kenya. In 2015 building commenced and later that year the first classrooms opened.

The Soma Leo Foundation was registered with the Charity Commission. Pound Gates staff acted as Trustees of the charity and worked with the local community to identify priorities, which included supporting other schools near Nyiera, and generally help the wider community which suffers with severe poverty.

In 2018 we sent a shipping container packed with PCs, laptops, other electronic equipment, books and other learning materials. Much of these were donated by Suffolk businesses and schools. We were able to gift these to our school, neighbouring schools and other charities operating in western Kenya.

Over ten years we organised events and donated funds to the charity to develop the school and meet all of its running costs. Our school supported nearly 300 primary aged children through their first years in education whilst providing clothing and nourishment. We also provided work opportunities for teachers and other staff.

At the end of 2025 we gifted the school infrastructure to the local community and closed the charity. We are immensely proud of the legacy and to know the community has a great asset for the future.
